Creating a Consistent Prayer Routine: Tips for Busy Christians
Let’s be honest—life is busy. Between work, parenting, errands, church, deadlines, and everything in between, it’s no wonder prayer can sometimes feel like something we squeeze in when we remember or when there’s a crisis.
But deep down, many of us long for a consistent, vibrant prayer life that keeps us connected to God in the everyday moments, not just the chaotic ones.
If you’ve ever said, “I want to pray more, but I just can’t seem to stay consistent,” you’re not alone. The good news? God isn’t looking for perfect prayers, He just wants your heart.
Let’s look at some simple, realistic ways to build a prayer routine, even with a busy schedule. Because we're only human after all.

1. Start with Just 5 Minutes
Sometimes we overcomplicate prayer, thinking it has to be long or filled with poetic words. But Jesus taught us simplicity in Matthew 6:7-8:
“And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”
Start small. Set aside just 5 intentional minutes a day—whether it’s while your coffee brews, before you open Instagram, or as your kids nap. It’s not about the length but the heart behind it.
Eventually, you can build up to praying longer. However, the key is to start small.
2. Attach Prayer to an Existing Habit
This is a game-changer. Pair prayer with something you already do daily. For example:
Pray while brushing your teeth.
Pray during your commute.
Pray right before or after lunch.
Pray as you fold laundry or take a shower.
These are small, quiet moments you can turn into powerful prayer habits. And the more you do it, the more it sticks.
3. Keep a Prayer Journal Nearby
Sometimes it’s hard to stay focused during prayer, especially when your mind is racing with to-dos. A journal can help. Write down your thoughts, prayers, and even questions to God. Over time, this becomes a beautiful reminder of answered prayers and spiritual growth.
“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;” -Colossians 4:2 NKJV
4. Use a Prayer Prompt or Plan
If you feel stuck or don’t know where to begin, a prayer prompt can help. Try using:
The ACTS method (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication)
A list of names or needs. Mention your cousins, aunties, friends and anyone you think should be included in prayer.
A devotional with a daily prayer.
if you often sit down to pray and feel lost on where to begin, a devotional can provide helpful structure and inspiration. Devotionals often include a short scripture, a reflection, and a prayer point — perfect for busy schedules. A great option is the Purpose of Heart Devotional, which is designed to help individuals and families connect with God daily in a meaningful and manageable way. It offers guided prompts that help you stay focused and consistent in your walk with God.
As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Let God’s Word and helpful tools like devotionals light the way each day.
A prayer app or reminder alarm
Intentionally set reminders throughout the day to pray. Get a prayer app if need be. These tools aren’t replacements for prayer—they’re guides to help build the habit until it becomes second nature.
5. Give Yourself Grace
Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day or two. God isn’t keeping a scorecard. He's not like us. He’s a Father who simply loves spending time with His child. Like Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us:
““Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. His mercies are new every morning.”
Start fresh. Pray in the car. Whisper a prayer at bedtime. Just talk to Him. He’s always listening.
Your Prayer Life Matters

Prayer isn’t about performance, it’s about presence. Whether you’re whispering a prayer while cooking dinner or crying out to God in the middle of a hard moment, you are building relationship. And that's what's important.
Consistency in prayer doesn’t come from perfection, it comes from persistence. Show up, even if it's messy or short. And know that God delights in every word you bring to Him.
